Who is Jane?
My journey to becoming a celebrant began when I was a shy, frizzy haired 10 year old girl, and I discovered the theatre. A whole new world opened up to me – one of imagination, music, language and ritual. I discovered in myself a love of people, and a curiosity for what makes us similar and what makes us different. I learned the power of silence; the beauty of a well-timed moment. My passion for theatre remains.
During my formative years I was academic as well as dramatic, but it was my innate love of life, people and places that spurred me on to some fabulous adventures.
At the age of 18 I lived with a Muslim family in a remote village in Malaysia for a year, and there I learned a lesson that has stayed with me for life – we all want love, and peace and happiness – regardless of the colour of our skin, the language we speak, or the religion we do/do not follow. We may express those things, and seek those things in very different ways, but the fundamental desire remains. I have had the joy of travelling to many countries and experiencing an array of cultures over the years, and my belief remains.
I went to university in my twenties and again in my thirties, and attained a degree in English and Drama. Ever curious, I also studied a bit of anthropology, psychology and philosophy. I attended Teachers' College and became a Secondary School Teacher and in my twenties I also graduated from the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art.
Nothing in my life has been wasted. I have lived, and still live, a life full to the brim. And all that learning and travelling, living and performing, has brought me to this rewarding and joyful job of being a celebrant. My job is to listen to people. It is about allowing people to be true to themselves whilst guiding them through the words, symbols and rituals that can help to create the ceremony they desire. I LOVE MY JOB.
When I'm not being a celebrant... I like to walk/run in the forest, on the beach and in the hills. I like to drink coffee/wine, and eat food someone else has cooked (not something I'm good at). I am involved in my local musical society. I like to adventure and try new things. I value my diverse family and friends immensely, and all that they bring to my life.
